Affile

There are three good reasons for spending a few hours in Affile, a little town in the province of Rome, not far from Subiaco. The first one is historical: before have reached Subiaco and founded his monasteries, the young Benedict from Nursia had spent here a short time of his life. Just in time to make the first miracle in his career: the mending of the sieve, accidentally broken by his nurse. The little church of Saint Peter with its fifteenth-century frescoes was built to commemorate that event. They are not in top shape any more, but they can still evoke the devotion of a town and its astonishment towards this aspiring Saint.

The second one is a platitude, I admit: Affile’s old town centre is beautiful! It is still intact in its Roman and mediaeval architectures, because it is alive, as its alleys can demonstrate since they are still proudly inhabited. There is another reason that contributes to the town limelight: Affile’s Cesanese, the typical wine grape variety recovered few decades ago by some keen on wine locals, and today loved by wine experts. Which is the best way to taste Affile’s Cesanese? In front of one of the marvellous sunsets that can be seen from the old town centre’s little squares!

To sum up:

What can I see?

– Il centro storico, ancora integro e vissuto

– La piccola Chiesa di San Pietro, la chiesa del primo miracolo di San Benedetto, con i suoi affreschi del XV sec.

– La Chiesa di Santa Maria, situata nella piazza del borgo

Can I go all the year?

Certo che si. Magari nel periodo della vendemmia, correndo il rischio di trovare qualche cantina aperta…
